Résumé

'Monitor and Report: Experiences of a Security Guard in Australia's Covid-19 Hotel Quarantine Program' is a commentary book detailing the author's journey in, and out, of the security industry. After twenty-years of working in government, IT projects, and managing small businesses, he did a security licensing course, and then started working in nightclubs and bars. Once Covid-19 hit the world, he was firstly imprisoned at home, but then got to work at a quarantine facility for incoming international travellers.
This book sheds light on what it felt like to be assigned to a position in a quarantine facility, all by himself on a hotel floor, and having to sit there, or stand, or walk around, for the twelve hours of all those overnight shifts he had to work. The work directive, to 'monitor and report'.            The security guards in the Hotel Quarantine Program protected Australia, just like every other frontline worker involved in the fight against covid-19.
During the author's nearly twelve months in the program, employers would change, daily testing & mandatory mask-wearing would come in, variants would emerge, and quarantine protocols would finally end. In that time, he got to experience the excitement of starting a new job, and duty to his country, but also boredom, and frustrations with onsite guard management hierarchies & inefficient rostering systems.            This book serves as record of the author's journey in navigating the covid-19 pandemic, which can be summarized as, not being afraid of the risks that life keeps throwing his way, and above all else, maintaining compassion & empathy for others.
