1946 aus dem Nichts heraus gegründet, präsentiert sich die Universitätsbibliothek Mainz heute als moderne Dienstleistungseinrichtung mit einem Gesamtbestand von mehr als 3, 5 Millionen Printmedien und gut 110.000 E-Books und E-Journals sowie mit einem umfangreichen Informations- und Schulungsangebot. Christian König zeichnet diese Entwicklung von den Anfängen bis 2011 nach und beleuchtet insbesondere den ersten Aufbau der Bibliothek in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit sowie ihren Strukturwandel von einem zwei- zu einem weitgehend einschichtigen Bibliothekssystem.
