American writer and journalist Edward Bellamy (1850-1898) was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and worked as an editorial writer for the Springfield Union and the New York Evening Post. He is known for the utopian novel Looking Backward, 2000-1887, and its sequel Equality, as well as the psychological romances Miss Ludington's Sister and Dr. Heidenhoff's Process.

Miss Ludington believes that the girl she was at seventeen is a separate person, dead these forty years - so she builds a copy of the village she grew up in and hangs the girl's portrait in it. Then a medium produces her. Bellamy's Looking Backward sold hundreds of thousands and spawned more than 160 Nationalist Clubs; this earlier novel is his strangest, and the fraud is not the interesting part.
