However, growing evidence highlights the significant role of fungi in health and disease. This article delves into the fascinating world of the mycobiome, exploring its composition, ecological interactions with bacterial communities, and its influence on immune regulation and disease progression.
Special attention is given to the therapeutic potential of fungi, not just as pathogens but also as sources of bioactive compounds. Fungi have historically been prolific producers of antimicrobial, immunosuppressive, and anticancer agents. The review also outlines current approaches and challenges in fungal drug discovery, including culture-based and metagenomic techniques, as well as the promise of AI-driven tools in identifying novel fungal metabolites.
Through this lens, the piece underscores the untapped potential of the mycobiome in guiding next-generation drug discovery efforts.
