The book starts with a list of hard words and activities that help the children master them. In the well-illustrated story, Kyle the fox and Buddee the turtle argue about what to play and where to play it. Kyle manages to convince Buddee to play checkers with him. Buddee goes from not knowing anything about the game to being Buddee the Checker King! Vivienne wraps up her book with riddles and a word puzzle which uses checkerboard terms.
