"Master and Man" is a short story written by Leo Tolstoy in 1895. The story follows a landowner named Vasili Andreyevich Brekhunov and his peasant, Nikita, on a journey to purchase a forest.
They get caught in a blizzard and lose their way, but Vasili Andreyevich is determined to press on. Nikita becomes hypothermic and Vasili Andreyevich decides to leave him to die and continue on his own. However, he eventually falls off his horse and finds himself back with Nikita. He lies on top of Nikita to keep him warm and they are eventually rescued by peasants. The story ends with Vasili Andreyevich attaining a spiritual revelation and realizing that true happiness is found by living for others.
The story has been adapted into a 2012 British film called "Boxing Day".
