Marco Atilio Regolo. Un condottiero romano tra storia e mito

Marco Atilio Regolo, condottiero della prima guerra punica, rappresenta una delle figure più famose dell'età repubblicana, passato alla storia per aver per primo condotto le legioni romane in Africa e aver ivi subito, proprio quando sembrava sul punto di concludere vittoriosamente la guerra contro Cartagine, una devastante sconfitta. Fatto prigioniero dai Cartaginesi, sarebbe stato inviato a Roma in ambasceria, vincolato dal giuramento di tornare a Cartagine qualora la sua missione non avesse avuto successo.
Contro il suo personale interesse avrebbe sconsigliato i Romani dall'assecondare le richieste puniche e, fedele alla parola data, sarebbe tornato a Cartagine per morire tra indicibili torture, divenendo così esempio per eccellenza di rispetto della fides. Il libro si propone di ricostruire la realtà storica di questo personaggio e il processo che lo ha trasformato in paradigma di vir Romanus. He went down in history for having first led the Roman legions in Africa and having suffered, just when he seemed on the point of victoriously ending the war against Carthage, a devastating defeat there. Taken prisoner by the Carthaginians, he was sent to Rome on a diplomatic mission, bound by oath to return to Carthage if the mission was not successful. Against his own personal interest, he advised the Romans against complying with Punic requests and, true to his word, returned to Carthage only to die amidst unspeakable tortures, thus becoming an example par excellence of the respect for fides.
The volume aims at reconstructing the historical reality of this character and of the process that transformed him into a paradigm of Vir Romanus.
