Résumé

Manchester to Zion tells the true story of one family's journey through some of the most difficult years of early Latter-day Saint history. Beginning in the industrial city of Manchester, England, the Hardman family embraced the restored gospel and left their homeland to gather with the Saints in America. Their journey would take them across the Atlantic Ocean, up the Mississippi River, into the turmoil of Nauvoo, through exile and persecution, across the plains of the American frontier, and finally into the valleys of the Great Basin.
Along the way they faced the same hardships experienced by thousands of early pioneers-displacement, poverty, illness, violence, and the loss of loved ones. Yet through it all they pressed forward with faith, determination, and hope for a place where they could live their beliefs in peace. At the heart of this account is the story of Margaret Holden Hardman and her family, whose lives were shaped by sacrifice and resilience during the great westward migration of the Saints.
Drawing from preserved family records and earlier historical work compiled by previous generations, this book seeks to carry that history forward-retelling the story so it will not be forgotten. Manchester to Salt Lake is both a historical account and a tribute to the courage of those who crossed oceans, rivers, plains, and deserts in search of Zion
