Résumé

The centrality of love in Christian theology and practice has been underscored for millennia, with the concept of love acting as the fulfillment of the Law. In Catholic thought, this idea is rooted in the very words of Jesus Christ as recorded in the New Testament. Love, as both a divine command and a human responsibility, shapes the foundation of Christian morality. The phrase "Love is the fulfillment of the law, " though succinct, holds a vast and profound significance, reverberating throughout the Gospels, the writings of the Apostles, and the rich theological reflections of the Church Fathers.
The importance of love as the fulfillment of the Law is further emphasized by St. Paul in his letters. In Romans 13:8-10, he writes, "Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law." For Paul, love is not an optional aspect of Christian life-it is the very essence of the moral life, the force that unites and integrates all commandments. By declaring that love is the fulfillment of the law, Paul was emphasizing that the commandments against murder, adultery, stealing, and coveting are all expressions of what it means to love one's neighbor.
In Paul's view, love is the lens through which the believer must view all moral obligations.
