Résumé

Some debts are six centuries old. Thalen wakes in a clearing of burned trees with a name he half-remembers, a body full of injuries he cannot account for, and a small dragon-claw pendant at his throat that goes warm when he closes his hand around it. He does not know it is the only thing keeping him alive. Six hundred years ago, in a chamber beneath the city of Dornmir, his ancestor Maelren sealed the Scion-Captain Caelen alive to stop a thing that could not otherwise be stopped.
He swore he would come back for her. He never did. Caelen has been pressing on the inside of that seal ever since. The world has been hunting Maelren's bloodline from the moment of the sealing - and the man who is now hunting Thalen across the ash-burned wilds of Lorvandel was once Caelen's student, fifteen years old when the chamber closed, walking the world for six hundred years under a different name, waiting for a Scion strong enough to open it again. Thalen is that Scion.
He does not know it yet. He is about to.  What follows is a flight across a ruined country: a fishing-village runaway with phoenix-fire in her hands; a seven-hundred-year-old woman who knew Maelren and watched him fail; a chain of fire-posts that have been waiting in the dark, one by one, to be lit again. And at the end of it, in the chamber under Dornmir, a choice between what was promised six hundred years ago and what the living can still pay for.  Lorvandel: Ashes of the Forgotten is the first book of a trilogy about inheritance, fire, and the long debt the living owe the dead.
For readers who loved the patient worldbuilding of Christopher Paolini and the lyrical voice of Patrick Rothfuss - a debut fantasy with weight, atmosphere, and a story that earns its silences.  In the lineage of Eragon and The Name of the Wind.
