R. D. Blackmore (1825-1900) was an English novelist and fruit-grower. He practiced law before turning to literature, writing his works from his home in Teddington, Middlesex. His novels include Lorna Doone (1869) and The Remarkable History of Sir Thomas Upmore, Bart., M. P. (1884).

Blackmore grew fruit in Teddington and insisted the market garden mattered more than the writing; this 1869 romance made Exmoor a place people visit, and John Ridd's voice - slow, literal, immovable - carries all thirteen hundred pages.
