Der Begriff der Wende ist so uneindeutig wie schöpfungsträchtig. Das Wort, unterschiedlich definierbar je nach Kontext, Disziplin oder Verwendungsmotivation des Sprechers, scheint eine große symbolische Kraft zu haben. Dem Begriff liegt eine tiefe Überzeugung von fundamentaler Veränderung bestimmter Parameter zu Grunde, die alte Deutungsmuster ablöst. Kultur und Literatur reagieren wie ein Seismograph auf die Umbruchsgefühle: Wendepunkte mit den sie begleitenden Unsicherheiten werden künstlerisch wie literarisch verarbeitet.
Die Beiträge in diesem Band zeigen jedoch nicht nur die Potenziale der historischen Wenden für die Literatur und Kulturentwicklung auf, sondern sie thematisieren auch Wende als Deutungsinstrument für vergangene Phänomene.
