Liaisons explores the hardships, frustrations, failings and fortunes of two fictitious families within an isolated, sugar-growing, colonial county community in Victorian times. Besides liaisons that involve tragedy, love, sex, violence, murder, attempted rape, kidnapping and near-drowning, issues such as women's rights, social conventions, labour exploitation, predatory capitalism and racial divisions are examined in the context of their time.
Emerging from some potentially fatal experiences is theheroine of the tale - Anne Prescott.____________________________________________With Liaisons, Duncan Du Bois provides insight into a time that has shaped our society. Within the fictional tapestry he weaves, the challenges and tribulations of the Europeans who settled along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast are revisited.
