This work offers a synchronous exploration of the paradigm of quotatives in oral English, following the advent of this functional group of two new forms, GO and BE LIKE, which have been used for several decades to introduce direct discourse. The adopted approach is both poly-systemic and multi-theoretical. This work also fits in a framework of multi-modal studies that consider oral communication to be a composite element in which the role of prosodic and gestural variations is equally important as that of the verbal.
