Im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert entfaltet sich in den Reihen der pietistischen Erneuerungsbewegung eine rege autobiographische Tätigkeit, an der Frauen sich beteiligen. Ihre religiösen Bekenntnisse, Erfahrungs- und Rechtfertigungsberichte fanden auch im Druck Verbreitung.
Ein einzigartiges und frühes Zeugnis (zuerst 1689) aus der Fülle solcher Texte bildet die Lebensbeschreibung der Johanna Eleonora Petersen, geb.
von und zu Merlau (1644?1724), einer der markanten Persönlichkeiten des frühen Pietismus. Ihre bereits zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichte Autobiographie, die - überarbeitet und erweitert - mehrere Auflagen erfuhr, erscheint hier in der Fassung von 1718 mit neuer Kommentierung. Dieser Text vermittelt Einblicke in die Erfahrungswelt einer aus altem, verarmtem Adel stammenden Frau, der sich mit der pietistischen Bewegung die Möglichkeit erschloss, sich als Organisatorin, Autorin und theologische Vordenkerin u.a.
des Chiliasmus und der Wiederbringungslehre zu profilieren. [Life of Joh. Their religious confessions, reports of experiences and justifications were also published in print. A unique and early testimony (first published in 1689) from the plenty of such texts is the biography of Johanna Eleonora Petersen, née von und zu Merlau (1644?1724), one of the prominent personalities of early Pietism.
Her autobiography, which was published during her lifetime and which - revised and expanded - went through several editions, appears here in the 1718 version with new commentary. This text provides insights into the world of experience of a woman from an old, impoverished nobility, who, with the Pietist movement, was given the opportunity to make a name for herself as an organizer, author and theological pioneer of e.g.
chiliasm and the doctrine of restoration.
