The world is racing to find new sources. One of the most promising places to look has never been examined. Kashmir's roughly 230, 000 square kilometers sit on the western end of the same Himalayan collision system that made China's west the world's dominant mineral province.
Yet no single systematic mineral survey has ever covered the territory - not because the rock is barren, but because a seventy-five-year political dispute denied access. When access to one part increased, a survey followed: in 2023, India's Geological Survey reported a major lithium resource at Reasi, in Jammu & Kashmir.
