Wer John Wesleys Theologie kennen lernen will, muss seine Predigten lesen. Wesley hat keine Dogmatik geschrieben, wohl aber Gelegenheitsschriften, Tagebücher und Briefe. Doch er hat die methodistische Erneuerungsbewegung wesentlich durch seine Predigten geprägt. In der modernen Ausgabe seiner Werke sind 151 Predigten veröffentlicht, die von 1725 bis 1791 reichen. Der vorliegende Band verfolgt die Entwicklung seiner Predigten über die Jahrzehnte.
Er zeigt auf, wo die Konstanten zu finden sind und wo sich das Verständnis des Evangeliums weiterentwickelt. Dabei kommt er zu überraschenden Aussagen, vor allem in den Predigten des älteren Wesley. Der Band lässt Wesley selber zu Wort kommen. Vieles ist zum ersten Mal in deutscher Sprache zu lesen und ermöglicht damit Wesleys Theologie anhand seiner Predigten selber zu entdecken. Wesley did not write a dogmatic book, but tracts, appeals, journals and letters. But he shaped the Methodist renewal in the Church of England essentially through his preaching. The modern edition of his works collects 151 sermons, reaching from 1725 to 1791. The present study follows the development over the whole timespan. It shows where continuity lies and where the understanding of the Gospel evolves.
It finds surprising new thoughts, particularly in the sermons of the elder Wesley. The study allows Wesley to speak on his own. Many quotes are published for the first time in German and thus give a chance to discover Wesley's theology through his preaching.
