Shunzo Miyawaki (1926-2003) was working as an editor at a major Japanese publisher when his debut work of non-fiction established him as a major literary figure in Japan. Published in 1978, it became an instant critical and commercial success, selling over 200, 000 copies and giving rise to the genre of railway travelogue in Japan. He went on to write many more books in this area, detailing his travels both within and beyond Japan and received the Kikuchi Kan Prize, which honours achievement in all aspects of Japanese culture, including literature and film.
