In Joy And In Sorrow

Alba Marineli is unable to have children, so she adopts Cirilo, a boy who becomes her and her husband's joy. Amidst so much happiness, Alba finally becomes pregnant as she had always dreamed. After the birth of her daughter, Alba rejects Cirilo and returns him to the orphanage, since she had only adopted him because she had not been able to have children until then. When her husband learns of this, having grown attached to the boy through daily interaction, he goes to retrieve him from the orphanage and discovers, with great difficulty, that little Cirilo had been adopted by a couple who are part of a circus that travels the country.
Years pass and Cirilo becomes one of the most beloved clowns in the Brazilian circus. It is then that Giovana Marineli, Alba's daughter, seeks out the boy to inform him that her mother very much wants to see him again. In this reunion, Alba apologizes for having returned him to the orphanage and informs him that he will receive part of the inheritance that is due to him. Upon learning of her parents' decision, Giovanna rebels and forces Cirilo to give up the inheritance he will receive.

His only ambition is to win over Wanderleia, the daughter of the circus owner where he works, who does not accept Cirilo as her future son-in-law because he is simply a clown. In the meantime, Giovanna's fiancé gets into a fight and, for killing a man, is sentenced to five years in prison. Giovanna promises to wait for him until he is released, but fearing that he might contract a transmissible disease while imprisoned, she ends up marrying another man, with whom she has a child.
