Horace Walpole (1717-1797) was the 4th Earl of Orford, a British antiquarian, and a man of letters. He served as a Member of Parliament and built Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, where he conducted his literary work. His writings include the Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto and the collection of short fiction Hieroglyphic Tales, printed in 1785.
