Résumé

Growing Up! Systemic and Neurological Independence is more than a book-it's a lifeline for young adults, parents, and professionals navigating the complex world of neurodiversity. Written by Gopal Das (also known as BJ Heugly, LCSW), a seasoned therapist, researcher, and child advocate with decades of hands-on experience, this book brings together the best of psychology, lived wisdom, and practical strategies for self-regulation, executive functioning, and social-emotional growth.
If you're a neurodiverse teen or young adult, you'll find tools here to help you: Strengthen your executive functioning skills-planning, organizing, and following through. Learn self-regulation techniques to calm anxiety, manage strong emotions, and build confidence. Develop life skills for independence so you can navigate school, work, and relationships more effectively. Reframe your story so you see your differences as strengths, not setbacks.
If you're a parent, educator, or clinician, you'll discover: Clear explanations of how neurological independence develops over time. Practical frameworks for supporting young people without creating dependency. Fresh strategies for parenting neurodiverse teens that encourage both structure and freedom. Guidance to help "spicy kids" feel understood, respected, and empowered. Unlike many self-help or parenting books, Growing Up! does not offer a rigid formula.
Instead, it provides a compass-a way to help individuals and families orient themselves toward clarity, resilience, and growth. Through reflections, exercises, and candid stories, readers are invited to step out of old patterns of overthinking, people-pleasing, or self-criticism, and step into a new experience of self-trust and personal agency. Blending humor, heart, and hard-won insight, Heugly shows that growing up isn't about "fixing" yourself-it's about remembering your own strength.
With metaphors as playful as petri dishes and interpretive dance, he makes complex ideas simple, accessible, and often laugh-out-loud funny. This book is especially relevant for: Neurodiverse teens and young adults learning to thrive in a world that often misunderstands them. Parents seeking research-driven, compassionate approaches to raising resilient kids. Teachers, therapists, youth workers, and coaches wanting practical tools for everyday situations.
Growing Up! is about learning to meet challenges with curiosity, courage, and creativity. It equips the next generation of neurodiverse individuals with the tools to live not just independently, but fully and joyfully. Whether you're a young adult searching for your own compass, or a parent or professional guiding the way, this book offers both the clarity, practical approaches, and the grounded encouragement to take the next step.
Growing Up! is an invitation to freedom, resilience, and the confidence to live life on your own terms.
BJ (Brandon) Heugly, LCSW-also known as Gopal Das-has spent over two decades as a child advocate, therapist, researcher, and teacher devoted to improving the lives of neurodiverse youth and their families. His work blends deep clinical experience with a compassionate, practical approach that emphasizes self-trust, clarity, and strength. Licensed as Brandon Heugly, LCSW, BJ brings years of professional training in schools, hospitals, non-profits, and private practice.
The name Gopal Das-given by his primary guru-reminds him that all his work is in service to love itself, whether we call it God, Krishna, or simply Life Itself. At the heart of his work is the belief that every young person, including those with ADHD, autism, or other neurodiverse profiles, deserves more than management-they deserve tools that unlock real autonomy and confidence. Families and professionals often turn to him when old strategies no longer work, seeking fresh, research-driven approaches that create lasting change.
His career includes founding Chiron Academy, a research-based school that fostered responsibility, respect, and excellence across mental, physical, and academic domains, and leading Camp Takoda, a strengths-focused summer camp for neurodiverse youth developed in partnership with the University of Utah. His leadership there helped hundreds of families experience new hope and connection. Music, art, and creative expression are central to his holistic vision of neurodiversity.
An accomplished musician and visual artist, Gopal integrates creativity into his trainings, showing how expression can be a pathway to healing and empowerment. Today, through TrueNorthNeuro.org, he continues his mission of equipping parents, educators, clinicians, and especially young adults themselves with practical, strengths-based strategies for independence and well-being. Families know him not only for his expertise, but for his warmth, encouragement, and steady reminder that growing up is about discovering-and trusting-your own inner compass. Gauri Devi is a writer, teacher, and chaplain whose work brings together decades of professional communication expertise, lived authority, and devotional study.
For over 25 years, she worked in global corporate communications, serving as a senior writer and strategist for major brands and executives worldwide. Her career spanned large-scale, multilingual campaigns and high-level messaging for diverse audiences. Alongside that work, she served as a volunteer chaplain, accompanying individuals and families through life's most difficult passages-grief, illness, crisis, and transition.
This unusual combination-professional mastery in translating complex ideas for global audiences, paired with lived experience in service and spiritual practice-now informs her full-time commitment to seminary and chaplaincy training. She is known as a synthesizer of ideas and a skilled "triangulator, " able to integrate insights from diverse fields and distill them into clear, compassionate language that reaches both analytical and intuitive audiences.
She currently serves as Director of the Community Chaplaincy Program at WholeFam Seminary, where she guides the development of interfaith training in listening, accompaniment, and resilience. She is also a Senior Vedic Advisor and Jyotish Instructor at VedicArts.org, teaching cycles of time and cosmology as practical tools for alignment. In addition, she serves on the Advisory Board of True North Neurodiversity, supporting research and training for neurodiverse young adults, parents, and clinicians.
Her current projects include SWEET! (a forthcoming book on self-trust, sugar addiction, and our relationship to life's sweetness), the Forty Days of Death Preparation series (an interfaith guide to end-of-life reflection and suicide prevention), and the development of a quickly growing global sanctuary network for women seeking rest, silence, and communal self-sufficiency. Across all her work, Gauri is recognized for her clarity, warmth, and steadiness-helping people translate complexity into something they can truly live, reminding each person that healing and harmony are already moving within them.
