Die Aufsätze zur kirchlichen Zeitgeschichte des Verf. Günther van Norden beleuchten die Rolle der evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland während der Weimarer Republik, im "Dritten Reich" und in der Nachkriegszeit. Es geht um die Bekennende Kirche, die mit der Barmer Theologischen Erklärung 1934 zwar ein verbindliches Bekenntnis verabschiedete, aber nur in Teilen auch den Mut zur Bildung einer entsprechenden kirchlichen Organisation fand.
Die Problematik eines kirchlichen Widerstandes wird ebenso erörtert wie das Verhältnis der Kirche zu den Juden oder die Position vor allem reformierter Theologen (Karl Barth). Schließlich geht es auch um die Frage, welches Erbe die Bekennende Kirche hinterlassen hat. [The Word of God is Encouragement and Demand.
