Résumé

They were never famous. They were barely good. But one song still refused to die. Back in the 1980s, the Parking Lot Prophets were five suburban Chicago kids with cheap amps, big hair, questionable tuning, and absolutely no evidence-based reason to believe they were going to become the next great American rock band. Which, naturally, they did. At least in their own heads. They played basements, dorm parties, Battle of the Bands, community halls, and anywhere else that would tolerate loud guitars, too much cologne, and teenage boys confusing volume with destiny.
They had no money, no record deal, no road crew, and no real plan. But they had each other. And for a little while, that was enough. Then life happened. Jobs. Marriages. Kids. Bills. Bad backs. Quiet disappointments. The music got packed away. The friendships faded. The dream became one of those things everyone pretended not to miss. Decades later, Mike Rourke is fifty-seven, responsible, tired, and quietly aware that some part of him disappeared a long time ago.
Then a cassette tape arrives from his dead former bandmate, Robbie "Riff" Callahan, along with one final request:Finish the song they were too young to understand. That request pulls Mike back into the lives of the surviving Parking Lot Prophets: Paulie, the drummer who stayed local and remembered everything; Danny, the aging frontman still hiding pain behind performance; and Kevin, the polished successful one who won adulthood but is no longer sure it worked.
What begins as a reunion quickly becomes something more: a reckoning with old friendships, unfinished songs, buried regrets, and the people they became while they were busy trying to grow up. Funny, heartfelt, sarcastic, and deeply nostalgic, Four Chords and a Midlife Crisis is a Gen X novel about music, memory, grief, friendship, second chances, and the ordinary nights that turn out not to be ordinary at all.
It is for anyone who ever had a garage band, loved a song too much, lost touch with old friends, packed away a dream, or looked back and realized the best parts of life were happening before anyone knew to pay attention. Because sometimes the song you never finished is the one that still remembers who you are.
