Résumé
For My City: My Life as a Basketball Influencer is a deeply personal memoir chronicling Ricky Goings' journey from the basketball courts of Washington, D. C., to becoming a key figure in the world of grassroots basketball. Raised in Northeast D. C. in a family with a rich basketball lineage, Ricky's early life was shaped by the game, as well as by the lessons imparted by his father, a local playground legend.
However, his path was anything but easy. From enduring personal tragedies, including the loss of mentors and family members, to navigating the harsh realities of inner-city life, Ricky found solace and purpose in basketball. The sport was more than a game to him-it was a bridge between generations, a means of survival, and ultimately, a tool for community transformation. As a young player, he experienced the politics of the sport firsthand, facing both opportunities and disappointments that would later fuel his mission to create spaces where talent and passion-not privilege-dictated success.
But For My City is not just about basketball-it is a story of resilience, mentorship, and giving back. From playing in historic D. C. leagues to working with NBA athletes and building platforms for young hoopers, Ricky's influence extends beyond the court. He co-founded programs such as the 30x30 Select Combine and the Alumni Basketball League, providing young athletes with exposure and opportunities he once fought to find.
His journey is marked by setbacks, from struggles with coaches who stifled his potential to systemic barriers that limited opportunities for Black athletes. Yet, Ricky transformed those experiences into fuel for a greater mission: uplifting the next generation. His memoir captures the essence of perseverance, illustrating that real success is not measured in personal accolades, but in the impact one leaves behind.
For My City is both an homage to his hometown and a rallying call for those who dare to dream despite the odds. I prefer this response
