Résumé

In the spring of 1922, an isolated Bavarian farm became the centre of one of Germany's darkest unsolved crimes. Hinterkaifeck stood alone among fields and woods, a remote place where silence carried too far and footsteps in the snow could not easily be explained. In the days before the murders, strange signs unsettled the household. Tracks were found leading from the forest toward the farm, but none appeared to lead away.
A key went missing. A lock showed signs of tampering. Sounds were heard in the attic. The former maid had already left, convinced the house was haunted. Then, on the night of March 31, 1922, six people were killed at Hinterkaifeck. What followed made the case even more disturbing. The killer appeared to remain on the farm after the murders, feeding the animals, using the house, and moving through the rooms while the bodies lay undiscovered.
When neighbours finally entered the property days later, they found a scene that would haunt rural Germany for generations. Footsteps at Hinterkaifeck examines the facts, rumours, fears, and unanswered questions surrounding the case. It follows the Gruber-Gabriel family, the strange events that preceded the killings, the investigation that failed to produce a conviction, and the folklore that grew around the ruined farm.
This is not a tale of easy answers. It is a careful nonfiction account of murder, isolation, suspicion, and the eerie possibility that the family at Hinterkaifeck knew something was wrong before death arrived at their door. More than a century later, the case remains unsolved. The footprints still lead toward the farmhouse. They still do not lead away.
