Résumé

Two journalists travel to an island in the Arctic Circle where scientists are searching for fossils of extinct animals. Like all journalists, they have a lot of questions: how is it possible for an entire species to completely disappear? Word has it that we're in the midst of a sixth mass extinction, but what exactly does that mean? How did the first five happen? What is the scientific definition of an extinction? Alexandre Franc adeptly illustrates the narrative by Jean-Baptiste de Panafieu, a specialist in natural sciences and doctor of biological oceanology.
Panafieu, who has already authored a number of popular science books, gives a clear explanation of what mass extinctions are, cleverly comparing past extinctions with the one we are witnessing now. The two authors present us with a clear, intelligent, and lighthearted perspective on a fascinating phenomenon.
Ever since he opened his eyes, Jean-Baptiste de Panafieu has been passionate about marine life, dinosaurs, and mushrooms. Later in life, he expanded his field of interest to all of the natural sciences. After an initial training in oceanography, he taught high school science. Today, he writes novels, documentary books, and scripts for graphic novels -- both for adults and children. He has spent much of his energy writing about ecology, human/nature relations, and evolution.
His website can be found at www.panafieu.fr. Alexandre Franc was born in 1973. He spent his childhood in Lyon, but today lives in Paris. Since 2007, he has published more than 15 comics and graphic novels, sometimes as a co-author and sometimes on his own. He works often on children's literature and magazines, and collaborates with publications such as Topo and La Revue dessinée. In 2018, he created the art for "Guantanamo Kid, " a work of documentary fiction based on journalist Jérôme Tubiana's narrative of the youngest prisoner at the Guantanamo site -- Mohammed, a boy of 16.
His most recent work with Dargaud (2021) is "Extinctions: La Crépuscule des espèces" (Europe Comics 2021 for the English version), an ambitious collaboration with science writer Jean-Baptiste de Panafieu. His website can be found at www.alexandrefranc.com.
