Every Square Inch is a memoir about endurance, craft, and the long road to building a life inside one of the most gatekept worlds there is: tattooing. Beginning in a childhood marked by instability, emotional intensity, and a fierce need for escape, the book traces how creativity became both refuge and identity for its narrator long before she ever found a real route into the trade. Drawn to tattoos as a form of expression, control, and relief, she spends years circling the dream through bad decisions, reckless experiments, difficult relationships, young motherhood, and a restless search for belonging.
After moving to Yorkshire and trying, unsuccessfully, to settle into a life that never quite fits, she is jolted back towards tattooing by the realisation that the safer, more acceptable paths on offer are leading her further away from herself. She puts together a portfolio, secures a rare apprenticeship, and enters a studio world she has long imagined from the outside. There she learns not only the technical foundations of tattooing, but the discipline, structure, politics, and emotional complexities of the industry itself.
The apprenticeship is formative but bruising. Alongside the privilege of finally learning the craft properly comes sabotage, tension, and the psychological strain of trying to belong in an environment that often leaves her on edge. Even so, the experience gives her the standards, skills, and resilience that will later shape everything she builds. She grieves, raises her children, survives a difficult home life, and works quietly to keep her place in tattooing alive. While outwardly life appears unstable and delayed, inwardly she is still building - gathering stock, refining her standards, training her daughter, and carrying a business plan from house to house until the conditions of her life are finally stable enough to hold the dream she has protected for so long.

Working alongside her children, she finally opens the studio she has imagined for twenty years and builds it not just as a business, but as a place shaped by the lessons of everything that came before.
