Résumé

A farmer trapped by a hard New England winter, a sick wife who rules from her chair, and the girl who has come to keep house for them. Wharton framed it as a story reconstructed by a stranger years later, so the reader knows from the first pages that something has already gone wrong. She wrote it as a stylistic exercise and produced the least forgiving book of her career.

A propos de Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was an American novelist and short story writer who lived in New York and, from 1907, in France. She was the first woman awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, for The Age of Innocence (1920). Her work, which includes Ethan Frome and The House of Mirth, examines the rigid social codes of New York's upper class.
