Résumé

In the twilight years of the Qing dynasty, as the empire's borders fray and caravans wind through the perilous passes of Yunnan and Burma, a fog thicker than memory clings to the mountains. Traders whisper of spirits, smugglers laugh at superstition, and villagers speak only in hushed tones of a cult older than dynasties-the Eternal Harvest. Its priests do not conquer with armies or banners; they harvest.
Men vanish without struggle, wagons dissolve into mist, and crimson threads trail into the fog, binding the living into puppets who toil in silence. Li Wen, a hardened merchant from Kunming, leads his caravan southward, burdened with tea bricks and silver ambitions. Yet each mile drags them deeper into dread. Guards disappear, lanterns flicker in circles of light, and villages of hollow-eyed peasants warn of temples hidden in the mountains.
Smugglers speak of bargains with shadows, monks caution that resistance means death, and merchants profit from gems mined by the enslaved. The fog is patient, the strings relentless, and the caravan begins to unravel one soul at a time. But Li Wen refuses surrender. He must choose between bargaining with the cult, fleeing into ruin, or confronting the fog itself. His men fracture, torn between tribute and defiance, while lantern-bearing figures watch silently from the mist.
Each disappearance gnaws at their resolve, yet courage flickers still. The Silent Puppets is a gothic thriller steeped in atmosphere and dread, weaving history with supernatural terror. It is a tale of strings and silence, of merchants and smugglers, of monks who whisper warnings and caravans that vanish into eternity. At its heart lies the struggle between fear and defiance, between surrender and hope.
As the fog presses close and the cult's whispers grow louder, Li Wen must decide whether courage can outlast despair-or whether all roads lead only to silence.
