James Cole, his twin brother John, and their best friend Ryan embark on a summer trip to the Grand Canyon with their fathers, seeking adventure before their senior year.
While exploring, they stumble upon a hidden cave containing ancient dream catcher amulets guarded by Native American lore. Stealing the artifacts awakens a malevolent spirit, Machinitou, granting them dream-walking powers that corrupt Ryan and tempt John with promises of strength and revenge. As Ryan descends into darkness, using the amulets to manipulate dreams and exact vengeance, James grapples with his conscience, guided by their Native American guide, Sam (Soaring Eagle).
The story explores themes of brotherhood, first love, betrayal, good versus evil, and the consequences of choices, culminating in a sacrificial battle to contain the ancient evil and restore balance. This story is for everyone. It's an easy read novella, 44, 019 words, a page turning adventure perfect for a rainy afternoon escape set in a simpler time, while being thought provoking as well.
