Ordained after theological studies, he embarked on missionary work in South America before pursuing careers in aviation, travel, and translation. A gifted linguist fluent in seven languages, he eventually returned to university and earned a Master of Education degree. He now teaches French, Spanish, and Italian at a university in New York City.
