There, she meets Kael, a cynical insurgent who sees the city's ruling elite as parasites. As Cora uncovers a conspiracy to sacrifice the city's "remainders" to power a secret exodus for the elite, she discovers the terrifying truth about her own nature: she isn't just an auditor; she is a "Maxwell's Demon, " a living heat-pump capable of bending the laws of thermodynamics.
