Résumé

When it rains, sound is the first thing to get wet in this neighborhood. At the top of a hill in Changodong stands Dowonjae, an aging gosiwon-a cramped, low-cost rooming house where students and workers rent tiny rooms and share narrow corridors. Every noise lingers there: water dripping from the eaves, a door shutting and sliding down the hallway, the reluctant rush of water finally slipping through a clogged drain.
Han Seongyu, thirty-three, has spent five autumns inside this building, moving through the same routine day after day: cram school, the library, night shifts at a convenience store-and, in between, the quiet labor of keeping the place running while cleaning up what others leave behind. Then a new resident moves into Room 102. Her name is Yeonu. Young and withdrawn, she carries a small glass jar containing a snail that always seems to want out whenever it rains.
Before long, the fragile balance of the gosiwon begins to tilt around her: hair caught in the drain, a wet trail in the hallway, complaints piling up in the group chat. In a place where everyone is exhausted and on edge, suspicion is easier than patience-and blame finds a target before truth has a chance to speak. Quiet, precise, and emotionally restrained, When It Rains follows the small frictions of shared life in a confined space and reveals how quickly people can isolate one person for the comfort of everyone else.
Yet within that same narrow world, care still appears in nearly invisible ways: an unlocked rooftop door, a cup of warm water, a photograph carefully kept unfolded, a living thing placed gently back onto wet earth. A modern fable for adults, this is a story about loneliness, poverty, shame, and the fragile, hesitant ways people reach toward one another-slowly, quietly, and with lasting impact.
