Clarissa Hayden has used her stunning beauty to turn poverty into a life of extravagant wealth and social acceptance. When she became engaged to international business mogul Morgan Wolfe her prosperity seemed complete and secure. On the night of her engagement, she witnesses Morgan and two of his employees murder one of Morgan's business associates. Morgan sees Clarissa's terrified face in the bedroom window and the hunt is on.
Desparate for a place to hide, the only person she thinks might help her is Morgan's personal secretary, Virginia Essex. Wanting to extricate herself from the clutches of Wolfe, Virginia agrees to help Clarissa. She arranges for her to stay for "just s few days" in a downtown old hotel turned into a homeless shelter. She takes Clarissa's purse, jewelry and cell phone, gives her some old clothes so that she will blend in and leaves her in the shelter, promising to come back for her when the heat is off.
In the hostile world of the shelter, Clarissa is along and frightened. She is tormented by a cold social worker, a silent young maintenance man, and a surly neighbor. Awakened by a fierce storm, Clarissa discovers that she has been abandoned by Virginia and drugged. She does not know that Wolfe has hired an assassin to killer or that two of Morgan's henchmen have disobeyed direct orders and for their own personal reasons are closing in on Clarissa.
