Volker Stolle untersucht die Kelchsymbolik im evangelischen Kirchenlied in ihrem frömmigkeitsgeschichtlichen Rahmen. Kelch ist hier ein Bild für die Situation, die fromme Menschen (christliche Gemeinden) zu bewältigen haben, die die frohe Botschaft in sich aufnehmen und ihr im Gotteslob Ausdruck und Gestalt verleihen. Sie leben in einer eschatologischen Existenz, indem sie mit Christus verbunden sind und unter Leiden ihrer endlichen Vollendung entgegengehen.
Die Kelchstrophe diente der Kritik am gängigen Erscheinungsbild der Kirche sowie zur Kennzeichnung eines geistlichen Liedes. Von ihren reformatorischen Anfängen her erlebte die Kelchstrophe eine vielgestaltige Rezeption, die lange Zeit von einem kreativen Umgang geprägt war. Die Metapher des Leidenskelches hielt sich durch, während das Verständnis der damit verbundenen Symbolik deutlichen Wandlungen unterlag.
Schließlich aber verlor diese Metapher ihre Faszination, die zu ihrer Adaption in unterschiedlichen Frömmigkeitskontexten geführt hatte. Es zeigt sich eine bemerkenswerte mentalitätsgeschichtliche Plausibilität für die Verwendung der Kelchstrophe im evangelischen Kirchenlied. Here, the cup is an image for the situation that devout people (Christian communities) have to overcome, who adopt the good news and express and shape it in praise of God. They live an eschatological existence, in that they are united with Christ and heading towards their final consummation in suffering. The cup stanza was used to criticize the popular image of the church, as well as to indicate a spiritual song. From its Reformation beginnings, the cup stanza experienced a varied reception, which was influenced for a long time by a creative approach.
The metaphor of the cup of suffering persisted, while the understanding of the symbolism associated with it underwent significant changes. Eventually, however, this metaphor lost its appeal, which had led to its adaptation in various devotional contexts. A remarkable plausibility emerges for understanding the use of the cup stanza in the Protestant hymnal in terms of the changing mindset throughout history. Volker Stolle, Dr.
theol., Jahrgang 1940, war seit 1984 Professor für Neues Testament an der Lutherischen Theologischen Hochschule in Oberursel. Er lebt im Ruhestand in Mannheim.
