Konstantinos Simonides (1820/1824-1867?) war ein griechischer Fälscher, der nicht nur jahrhundertealte Handschriften abschrieb und nachbildete. Er erfand auch antike Autoren und veröffentlichte deren vermeintliche Werke, in denen er die Griechen das Papier, die Fotografie und sogar das U-Boot erfinden ließ. Wie ein Orkan fuhr er durch die Welt der klassischen Altertumswissenschaften und stellte alles, was darin wohlgeordnet schien, gehörig auf den Kopf.
Bis heute stellt sich die Frage: Will die Welt betrogen sein? Die hier versammelten Texte sind der detailreiche wie breit angelegte Versuch einer Gruppe internationaler Forscher, sich diesem und weiteren Aspekten einer faszinierenden Fälschertätigkeit zu stellen und dem Wirken und Leben des Simonides auf die Spur zu kommen. Konstantinos Simonides (1820/1824-1867?) was a Greek forger. Not only did he copy and replicate century-old manuscripts, he also invented authors from antiquity and published their supposed works, according to which he had the Greeks inventing paper, photography and even the submarine.
He wreaked havoc throughout the world of classical antiquity - like a hurricane, upturning everything that was in good order along the way. To this day, the question remains: does the world want to be deceived? This collection of writings shows the detailed and broad-based attempt of a group of international researchers to confront this and many other aspects of the fascinating work of a forger, as well as to trace the work and life of Simonides himself.
