Assistant procurator Hugh Lamont sets out to tackle corruption in the Moortown court by championing a new system in which justice will be delivered by a hand-picked jury of honorable townsfolk rather than Lord Thorn. As he's preparing for the first test of his new method the Order mage, Tamlyn, asks him to solve a murder. Hugh agrees to help although he soon regrets that when he finds out the murder has yet to happen and Tamlyn will be the victim.
Tamlyn also knows that his killer will be Wynn Quilliam and he is the defendant in Hugh's next trial. So to stop Wynn from being able to kill the mage Hugh will have to ensure that Wynn is found guilty, a task that'll require him to abandon his principles and behave as corruptly as Lord Thorn.
