Der Band enthält exemplarische Fallstudien zum Gebet, das zu den basalen Artikulationsformen des christlichen Glaubens gehört und von Anbeginn ein intermediales Phänomen war. Bibelwissenschaftler sowie Theologie-, Literatur- und Kunsthistoriker erkunden in ihren Beiträgen das Phänomen "Gebet" in seiner konfessionellen und medialen Bandbreite anhand von herausragenden Denkmälern der Gelehrsamkeit, der Frömmigkeit und der künstlerischen Produktion.
Besonderes Interesse richtet sich hierbei u. a. auf die Durchmischung heterogener medialer Gattungen, etwa auf die insbesondere im 17. Jahrhundert übliche und auffällig stark ausgeprägte visioverbale Konzeption von der Frömmigkeit dienlicher Literatur mit Holzschnitten und Kupferstichen, die zur affektwirksamen Imagination sowie zur Stiftung von Erinnerung beitrugen. Mit Beiträgen von Stefan Beyerle, Marc Föcking, Thomas Fusenig, Ursula Härting, Wilhelm Kühlmann, Seraina Plotke, Michael Rief, Jeffrey Chipps Smith, Johann Anselm Steiger und Ruben Zimmermann. Prayer in the Denominations and the Media of the Early Modern Period The volume contains exemplary case studies on prayer which is one of the basic forms of expression of the Christian faith and has been from the beginning an intermedial phenomenon.
Biblical scholars and historians of theology, literature and art explore the denominational and medial spectrum of the phenomenon "prayer" on the basis of outstanding monuments of scholarship, piety and artistic production. A special interest lies among others on the interlacing of heterogeneous medial genres, for example on the visio-verbal conception of piety in literature with woodcuts and copper engravings which has been common and particularly strong in the 17th century and contributed to an imagination with impacts on the affections and helped to create memory.
