Cyril of Alexandria's Johannine Exegesis

Cyril of Alexandria (c. 376-444 AD), one of the most influential theologians of the early Christian church, remains a towering figure whose thoughts shaped much of the Christian understanding of Christ's nature and the mystery of the Incarnation. Born into a religiously influential family, Cyril succeeded his uncle, Theophilus, as patriarch of Alexandria in 412 AD. His tenure as bishop is marked by significant theological disputes, which, while controversial at the time, would leave an indelible mark on Christian theology.
Cyril's exegesis of the Gospel of John is especially critical because it provides insights into his Christological understanding-an understanding that directly impacted the formulation of Orthodox Christianity as it confronted various heresies, including Nestorianism.
