Résumé

No one told her the city would become the enemy. She had lived in this city for years. She knew its rhythms, its shortcuts, its unspoken rules. She wore heels on Thursday evenings and had a table near the window at her favorite Italian restaurant and sat close enough to the stage to watch actors cry real tears. She belonged here-completely, effortlessly, the way anyone belongs to a place they have never had to fight to enter.
Then one Tuesday morning in February, a patch of ice on her front steps remade her world in one second. Now she moves through the same city with a walker, and nothing-not a bus, not a restaurant, not a theater, not a sidewalk-is the same. In five unflinching chapters, Courtesy Never Dies follows one woman as she navigates the brutal daily arithmetic of mobility disability in a major American city: the sneering stranger on the bus who tells her she shouldn't be there, the restaurant that hides her in a dark corner rather than give up a table by the window, the theater that sends her to an accessibility section so far from the stage the actors are the size of her thumbnail, the crumbling sidewalks and locked accessible entrances and blocked curb cuts that pass for compliance with a thirty-five-year-old law.
The city, she discovers, was never built for her - not really, not in any way that matters-and it has not been rebuilt for her either. But at the top of seven stone steps, on an ordinary afternoon, she finds what the city has nearly convinced her no longer exists: a man over ninety, in a rumpled jacket, who digs his heels in to hold a heavy door open for a stranger simply because it is the right thing to do.
Courtesy Never Dies is a small, fierce, deeply human story about grief, dignity, isolation, and the extraordinary persistence of ordinary kindness. It is written for anyone who has ever been made to feel like an inconvenience in a place they have every right to be. It is written for anyone who has ever held a door.
