College is all about finding your place in the world, making friends, and finding love (and classes and careers!), but for Mattie, Abby, and Drew, reality doesn't always deliver on that promise. After a troubled childhood, Mattie wanted a fresh start, but three years at a small, Ohio college have made her more stressed out than ever. She's determined to make her junior year count and is focusing on grades, work, and friends.
She definitely doesn't have time for the two guys pursuing her: Zach, who can't comprehend her pain and Mike, who has pain of his own. Abby's outgoing personality masks everything she doesn't want to admit: her internal chaos and fear of never being enough. Her relationship with Steve hasn't gone public because she's afraid to ask for more. Steve has doubts, too, but drives them away with exercise and taking care of other military veteran students.
If he can't trust Abby, he's going to lose her - and he can't sleep without her. Meanwhile, Drew is barely keeping his life together. His parents kicked him out for being gay, his lying ex got all their friends in the break-up, and his eating disorder is flaring. Thankfully, he's been adopted by loud, fun Abby and quiet, fierce Mattie to hang out and sing oldies on the weekends. Tom's proposition threatens to upset all the painful progress Drew has made.
