Desperate to become a nurse at 18, but not old enough, Cherry joins the Women's Auxiliary Air Force as a nursing orderly. Amidst the chaos of war, right before The Battle of Britain, Cherry falls in love with Joe, an American RAF pilot in Eagle Squadron.
But nothing is fair in love and war and while women do their bit for King and Country they still face prejudice and unequal treatment. Cherry finds solace in the camaraderie of the WAAF, easing her homesickness and fear for the safety of her loved ones during the Blitz. Joining the RAF Air Ambulance Service she and her team are dubbed The Flying Nightingales by the media. As the first female airborne paramedics, they bring home the gravely wounded after D-Day from the battlefields of Normandy.
Cherry and her team undertake daring mission after daring mission to rescue the wounded across Europe as the Allies advance against a relentless enemy. This historical fiction novel is inspired by the real-life stories of the courageous Flying Nightingales.
