"Captain January" is a children's novel written by Laura E. Richards and published in 1890. The story revolves around a lighthouse keeper named Januarius Judkins, also known as Captain January, and his adopted daughter, Star Bright.
Captain January had a difficult past, having been shipwrecked on a desert island for fifteen years before becoming a lighthouse keeper. One day, a shipwreck occurs near the lighthouse, and the only survivor is a baby girl whom Captain January names Star Bright. He raises her with the help of a milk cow and educates her using the Bible and Shakespeare's plays. The only visitor to the lighthouse is Bob Peet, a young pilot.
One day, a woman sees Star and believes she is her long-lost niece. However, Star refuses to leave Captain January. Eventually, Captain January passes away, and Star is taken care of by Bob Peet. A sequel to the novel, titled "Star Bright, " was published in 1927, which follows Star's life with fashionable people and her eventual return to the lighthouse.
