Résumé

Candia, 1669. The longest siege in history is entering its twenty-first year. Behind the greatest fortress walls of the Mediterranean, Venetian officer Marco Loredan has spent two decades fighting a war the rest of Europe has chosen to forget. He no longer believes in victory - only in the walls, and in the tunnels beneath them, where the real war is fought in darkness, gallery against gallery, mine against countermine.
On the other side of the trenches stands Yusuf, the vizier's son, a young man raised to finish what a generation of Ottoman soldiers could not. Between the two armies: a captive scholar, a woman in the square, and a discovery buried beneath the dead city of the ancient kings - a secret older than Venice, older than the Sultan, one that could be worth more than gold. One that could stop a war. As the final assault gathers and the last garrison prepares for the night everyone knows is coming, three men on opposite sides of the walls must decide what is truly worth saving from a dying city.
Set during the epic twenty-one-year siege of Candia (1648-1669) - the forgotten war of Europe - this is a novel of tunnels and secrets, of loyalty and exhaustion, and of the moment a fortress that forgot to fall finally remembers. Part of The Secrets of Crete, a series of standalone novels spanning four thousand years of Cretan history. Each book can be read independently.
