Résumé

It is important for a child to learn basic words to read fluently. This book, the last in a set of six, completes the list of words children in first grade should learn how to read and spell. The list includes sight words from the dolchlist as well as long "o" pattern -ow words, long "o" pattern -oa words, short "oo" pattern -oo words, -ow pattern words, long "oo" pattern words, long "e" pattern -ee words and academic vocabulary.
Mastering basic words at this level is very important. A child will want to read more if they know what they are reading so the more basic words they learn, the easier it is for them to read and enjoy all kinds of books. Learning how to spell is not easy but with persistence and help from parents, children learn. Once children master this entire list of words, it is easy for them to read and spell these words whenever they come across them in other books.
Teaching my twins to read would not have been possible without the list of words in this set of books. Not only did it make it easier for them to read other books, it made learning spellings fun. We split the words into groups and divided into a number they could comfortably learn. After reading each book we then did the spellings and increased the number of words when we were doing the easy spellings and reduced when we had to do the difficult ones.
I am happy to share this particular set of books with other parents and to say that to teach my twins to read and spell, this set of books was quite useful and effective.
