Instead of chosen ones, the novel follows builders, clerks, sweepers, and line-runners: Lysa, who refuses to call her inventions miracles; Savi Chalk, who distrusts adjectives; Kestrel, a recovering thief who now steals drama from emergencies; and Var Kiris, an imperial arrival who must learn the discipline of becoming usefully dull.
