Résumé

Oakland attorney Nia Carter inherited a haunted house, a dangerous bloodline, and an immortal protector she has every reason not to trust. At thirty-four, Nia has built her life on evidence, preparation, and control. Then her grandmother dies and leaves her a decaying Victorian in Oakland-with one impossible condition: Nia must sleep in the house for forty consecutive nights before she can claim it.
On her first night, blood on the plaster awakens a memory that is not her own. In the sealed basement, she finds Malachi Vale, a formidable warrior who has been waiting for the next woman in the Carter line to call him back into service. Nia soon learns that the Carter women have guarded hidden thresholds across Oakland for generations. These doors hold back supernatural predators that feed on stolen names, erased histories, and broken claims of ownership.
Now the protections are failing. A charismatic developer is acquiring the neighborhood parcel by parcel, ritualized deaths are drawing police attention, and the same civic forces displacing ordinary residents are giving an ancient enemy legal permission to enter protected ground. Malachi may be the only person capable of keeping Nia alive, but blood memory places him at the massacre that nearly destroyed her family in 1923.
As suspicion turns into reluctant partnership and dangerous attraction, Nia must decide whether inherited power can be used without repeating the cruelty that created it. Malachi must prove that protection is not possession-and confront the harm hidden inside his own oath. Set in a vividly rendered Oakland of moonlit Victorians, neighborhood organizing, ancestral magic, and political supernatural danger, Blood Over Oakland blends a high-stakes urban fantasy mystery with an emotionally intense enemies-to-allies-to-lovers romance.
It is ideal for adult readers who enjoy powerful Black heroines, Black witches, haunted houses, immortal protectors, family secrets, morally complicated magic, slow-earned trust, and love expressed through accountable action. The central romantic arc reaches a satisfying hopeful resolution while opening a larger supernatural conflict for the Bloodline of the Bay series. Begin the Bloodline of the Bay series and enter Oakland after dark.
Darius Blackman is the pen name of Bryan Frazier, a soldier of 22 years, father of three daughters, and independent author whose work is built around discipline, pressure, legacy, survival, love, history, identity, and the standards people live by when life demands more from them. Blackman's nonfiction foundation is The Darius Blackman Standards Series, a five-book leadership and self-development collection shaped heavily by the lessons he learned through more than two decades in the Army.
Through books such as A Man With Direction, Hold Your Ground, Built for Pressure, The Disciplined Man, and The Provider's Discipline, he writes directly to men who are ready to stop drifting, build stronger habits, protect their peace, carry responsibility, control their emotions, manage pressure, and become dependable in the places where weakness costs the most. But Blackman's writing does not stop at self-development.
His fiction moves with the same concern for consequence, identity, and power. In the Empire of Kimmett series, including The Exodus of Kemet, Convergence War, Fractured Infinity, and Thorn of convergence, he builds an Afrofuturist universe where ancient legacy, hidden history, advanced civilizations, leadership, survival, and the future of Black identity collide across worlds. His Khemara books, including The awakening of Khemara: The first signal and Khemara Unbound, continue his interest in awakening, transformation, mystery, and ordinary people being pulled into realities larger than they ever imagined.
These stories reflect one of Blackman's strongest creative themes: the moment when a person realizes the life they thought they understood was only the beginning.
