Résumé

In the hush of a late-summer evening, when the city lights first begin to bruise the sky purple, Melissa Harper still believed she was safe. She stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of her twenty-first-floor apartment, bare feet cool against hardwood, silk robe slipping from one shoulder as she watched the skyline glitter like scattered diamonds. Ryan was in the shower, humming off-key, the same tune he'd hummed since their college days.
Domestic. Predictable. Comforting. She loved that sound once. Loved the way it anchored her. Now it felt like background music to something louder, something darker, something that had already begun creeping under her skin. The first time Malcolm Jackson's gaze lingered on her-really lingered-it had felt like a match struck against dry tinder. He hadn't said anything inappropriate. He hadn't needed to.
The air between them simply thickened, grew heavy with unspoken heat, and when he finally spoke her name-"Mrs. Harper"-the two polite syllables sounded like foreplay. She told herself it was nothing. A fleeting thrill. A harmless fantasy. But fantasies have teeth. They sink in slowly. That night she dreamed of dark hands sliding up pale thighs, of a voice like aged bourbon whispering filthy instructions against her ear, of a thickness that stretched her until she couldn't tell pain from pleasure.
She woke soaked, thighs clenched, Ryan asleep beside her, oblivious. She told herself it would pass. It didn't. Instead it grew-quietly at first, then insistently-until every late meeting, every closed-door review, every accidental brush of his fingers against hers in the hallway became a small, exquisite torture. She began wearing the dresses he noticed. The blouses that dipped just low enough. The heels that made her calves flex the way she knew he liked.
She told herself she was still in control. She was lying. Because the truth-the shameful, pulsing truth-was that she already belonged to him in ways she could never explain to Ryan. In ways she could barely admit to herself. Somewhere deep inside, beneath the good wife, beneath the gold wedding band, a door had cracked open. And through that narrow slit poured hunger. Dark. Relentless. Insatiable.
She didn't know yet how wide that door would swing. She didn't know the nights she would spend bent over conference tables, balcony railings, shower walls-filled, used, claimed in every filthy way a body can be claimed. She didn't know her husband would one day kneel behind her, tongue lapping another man's seed from between her trembling thighs while tears mixed with the taste. All she knew, standing there at the window with the city breathing below her, was that the heat between her legs had become a constant, quiet drumbeat.
And it answered only to one name. Malcolm. The prologue was written. The story had already begun. And neither of them-wife, husband, nor the man who would own them both-would ever be the same again.
