The word Biology has been derived from two Greek words, 'Bios' meaning 'Life' and 'Logos' meaning 'Study' and thus isdefined as the science that carries out studies of life, livingorganisms, and their evolution. Biology is concerned with carrying out studies of physicalstructure, molecular interactions, physiological mechanisms, development, evolution and chemical processes taking placewithin a living organism.
For biology, 'cell' is regarded to be thebasic unit of life, 'gene' as the basic unit of heredity and'evolution' is considered to be the engine that is responsible fordriving the processes of creation and extinction of species. The person possessing the knowledge of biology has theopportunities to work in a variety of fields, namely Research, healthcare, environmental conservation, education, forensicscience, biotechnology, economics, business and industries, government policies and many others.
It has been seen that biology also referred to as the study oflife has facilitated the people in shaping up the world to someextent. Within biology lies many reliable and credible answersthat explanation as to why the things happen in a scientificmanner. The field of biology consists of numerous research fields andlike, the other fields of sciences make use of the scientificmethod for procuring results.
This gives the biologists theappropriate space and the chance that they require for displayof ideas along with the evidence and also provides with theopportunity of testing others' ideas for their own selves. SummaryIn today's time, Biology is considered to be a modern science, however, the origins within this field were noticed till late, starting from the early nineteenth century to the mid-nineteenthcentury.
The origins that took place in the field were based ona variety of traditions, practices and the areas of inquiry thatbegan in the antiquity. Since the traditional times, the history ofbiology focus over the two areas that merge together to formthe modern biological science namely, medicine and naturalhistory. Biology is considered to be as one of the basic subjects thatare studied by all at primary levels such as in schools.
This isessential as it facilitates the person in making an accuratechoice regarding their professional careers. Whether a personaspires to become a doctor, an engineer, nurse, psychologist, chemist, scientist or even a teacher; one makes its decisionsbased on all the basic knowledge that it has acquired in its lifeand then chooses the best out of all on the basis of his/herinterests. The people associated with carrying out studies of biologicalfields are referred to as Biologists.
They look into the behaviorand working of animals and other organisms and also carriesout studies of the interaction taking place between an organismand its external environment etcetera. The biology was earlierintroduced as natural historyand since then it has continued tobe a vital part of the field of science for 200 years. The field of biology consists of numerous research fields andlike, the other fields of sciences make use of the scientificmethod for procuring results.
This gives the biologists theappropriate space and the chance that they require for displayof ideas along with the evidence and also provides with theopportunity of testing others' ideas for their own selves.
