A decade of NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard data has confirmed what racially minoritised nurses and academics have long described: systematic disadvantage in appointment, promotion, and professional development that race-neutral mentoring cannot address. The formal apparatus of equality has expanded. The disparities have not closed. Beyond Patronage makes the definitive case for why race-neutral mentoring fails and what must replace it.
Drawing on 39 years of nursing and academic experience across Nigeria, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, Dr Benjamin Olusola Ajibade argues that conventional mentoring -- however well-intentioned -- reproduces racial inequality when it treats an unequal professional landscape as though it were level. Race-conscious mentoring names race explicitly, combines relational support with institutional advocacy, and holds organisations accountable for equitable outcomes rather than inclusive intentions.
